Hot Fusion or Keratin Bond ($$$$-$$$$$): Applied using a Keratin U-tip bond and heat, an application can take anywhere between 6-8 hours. However, one application can last between 4-6 months, but the hair will not be reusable. Most suitable for medium to thick density hair and clients who prefer not to frequent the salon.
Cold Fusion, Micro-Links or I-Tip ($$$$-$$$$$): With cold fusion, hair is pulled through a small bead or lock and clamped shut with a tool. The application is also lengthy, ranging from 4-6 hours and hair will not be reusable after first application. Also most suitable for medium to thick density hair and for those who prefer only to visit their stylist every six months.
Tape in Hair Extensions ($-$$$$): One of the most cost-effective methods of hair extensions, as the hair is reusable. Tape in hair extensions are applied to the hair using single or double-sided polyurethane tape. The application only lasts between 30 min to an hour for experienced stylists and can be used on all types of hair. Hair will need to be reapplied after 6-8 weeks of wear.
Glue-in ($-$$): Short-term method of hair extensions that only last until the next time you want to shower. Glue is applied to wefts of hair and then attached to the hair. Suitable for all types of hair, but we recommend not using this as a full-time method of hair extensions as the glue could damage your hair.
Sew-in or Braided ($-$$): Most suitable for thick, coarse hair, braids are used to create a natural base for the extension wefts. Another method that we do not recommend using as a full-time method of hair extensions as the braids could cause hair loss over an extended period.
Clip in Extensions ($-$$): Perfect for a special occasion, where you want to take your hair in and out with clips. Hair can be purchased from either a stylist or online retailer. Human hair will allow you to style the hair as normal with hot tools.
Micro-Link Skin Weft ($$-$$$): Hair is pulled through silicone lined micro-link skin wefts and clamped shut with a closing tool. The application only lasts about an hour and the hair is reusable. Most suitable for medium to thick density hair.
Weight/Length
The price of hair extensions also depends on weight and length. The longer the hair, the higher the price tag. However, it’s important to consider the amount of hair you’re receiving to make sure you are truly getting what you paid for. Double drawn means that 100% of the hair used in the weft is one length. However, this can look extremely unnatural, as most of us have natural layers. Some companies will advertise 20” hair and add in a variety shorter hairs (12”-18”) to cut down on costs and make the hair appear thicker. With a reasonable ratio of short to long hairs, your hair will look natural with full ends and natural layers.
A quick trick to determine if there are too many short hairs is to hold the hair from top to bottom and shake it. The shorts hairs will then become visible. If a significant amount of hair pops out, then you may want to rethink where you are purchasing your hair.
