There’s nothing more annoying (and common) than your hair not doing what you want it to do. We all have bad hair days and there are ways to deal with every hair type. Whether you have fine, frizzy, oil or coarse hair, below are tips to deal and fall in love with your hair type:
Fine Hair
Are you the girl that never curls her hair because it will just be flat in an hour? Don’t worry we’ve definitely been there and we know the feeling. Below are tips on how we handling a fine hair type:
Use Your Brush
This tip may seem like it’s something you don’t want to do but actually, brushing your hair actually stimulates oxygen in your hair to build more body. The brushes we recommend using is a quality bristle brush. By using a quality brush with natural boar bristles or flexible nylon, you will be preventing any further breakage or damage to your hair.
Switch Up Your Part
If you have had the same side part since middle school, maybe it’s time to switch it up. Try a middle part every once in a while. Hey, they’re even in style right now! By moving your part, you will lift the hair and increase the volume at the top of your head. To help keep your new part in place, use a blow dryer to lift the roots and spray some hairspray.
Add Waves
By sporting a curly hairstyle or waves, it will give your fine hair more volume. Make sure you turn down the heat though! When you have fine hair you don’t need to use super high temperatures with heat styling. By using less heat, you will reduce breakage and thinning of your hair. When using heat tools, make sure to always use a heat protectant spray to protect your hair. Having fine hair means that your hair will naturally dry faster so try to air dry when you can!
Frizzy Hair
If you suffer from a frizzy hair type, it’s because your hair is lacking moisture. Whenever you go outside your hair wants to absorb the moisture in the air, that’s why your hair gets frizzy. How can you prevent frizzy and unruly hair? Below are some tips:
Hair Masks
Hair masks are one of the most valuable tools for deep conditioning your hair. You can add some hydration back into your hair by using a hair mask once a week. The extra moisture will keep your hair fully hydrated and will prevent your hair from wanting to frizz up. Your hair will also become extra shiny!
Using the Right Products
Using the right products is super important when dealing with frizzy hair. You should definitely avoid any products that will dry out your hair even further such as sulfate or alcohol. Invest in all-natural products with good oils, like coconut oil.
Thick and Curly Hair
If you’re blessed with a thick and curly hair type you definitely know the problem that texture hair has. Whether your hair is frizzy or coarse here’s some tips to love your thick hair:
Use a Comb
The best way to brush your curly hair is to actually use a comb. If you use a brush your hair can split up into individual strands and easily frizz. It’s best to use a wide tooth comb or your finger before a shower to tame your curly mane.
Hair Treatments
Never underestimate the power of a weekly hair treatment. Curly and Frizzy hair ladies need extra nutrients on your scalp to reach the rest of your hair. At HEM, we recommend applying a mask once a week to nourish unhealthy hair back to life.
Over-Washing
The worst thing you can do for thick and curly hair is to wash it every day. When you wash your hair every day, you are stripping your hair of natural oils which will lead to more frizz. The less you wash your hair the better! You can use dry shampoo at your roots if you can’t take the not washing your hair.
Oily Hair
If you constantly feel like your scalp is overwhelmed by grease, you have an oily hair type. Most of us experience oily hair after not washing for a day or two but if your scalp feels oily even after a wash you might have oily hair. Here are tips to manage an extra oily scalp:
Don’t Wash Your Hair
You may find this tip weird but stop washing your hair. Most of the time your scalp over produces oil because you are washing your hair too much. When you wash your hair every day it can cause your oil glands to overproduce and try to make up for the lost natural oil. Start by washing your hair every other day and then eventually move to 2-3 times a week. It will take your scalp a while to adjust but in the end, your hair will be less oily.
Don’t Touch Your Hair
This is so important! The more your fingers are touching your hair, the more oil will be transferred to your hair and scalp. Avoid further oil buildup by keeping your hands off your hair. We recommend tying your hair into a ponytail or braid to resist temptation.
Use Dry Shampoo to Your Advantage
For girls (and guys) with oily hair, dry shampoo should be your best friend! Dry Shampoo soaks up excess oil within seconds of spraying it on your scalp. Another plus of dry shampoo is the extra volume it adds to your roots. If you need a cheaper alternative to dry shampoo, try using baby powder!
