At home haircuts can go two ways – amazing if done right, or it will have you calling your stylist mid ugly cry face to see when their next open appointment is. Most of us have a horror story (or two) of an at-home haircut but is it actually worth it? As long as you’re not going from super long locks to a bob using that pair of rusty scissors a quick trim can be okay.
Below are some tips to help trim your split ends when you don’t have time for the salon:
1. Begin with Damp Hair
Wet your hair by taking a quick shower or use a water-filled spray bottle. Comb through your hair using a wide-tooth comb or paddle brush and secure hair in a high ponytail. Your ponytail should be centered and smoothed out with the hair tie being as tight as possible.
2. Stand In Front of a Mirror
Stand in front of a mirror with great lighting. Use your dominant hand to move the elastic 3 inches away from the ends of your hair.
3. Cut Ends
Use a sharp pair of hair-cutting shears and trim the ends. Do a little bit at a time and go slowly. If you are just trimming your split ends, just cut the longest split ends at the ends of your hair. If you want to go for a more dramatic cut, you can cut off everything after the elastic.
