Tell us about yourself.
My name is Vanessa Benavente, also known as “Vinnie.” I am a Long Beach native, and I have been in the industry for about nine years now.
What has been your biggest challenge as a stylist?
My biggest challenge would have to be the start of my career. I left an office job and chose to apprentice/assist at a salon in Long Beach. Leaving an office/corporate job was really scary. You question whether you will make it or not? Can I build a big enough clientele? Will I make enough money? These were all questions I had, but I was willing to work and was eager to learn.
What was the biggest turning point in your career?
A turning point for my personally would have to be learning how to tell my clients NO. Early in my career I felt I had to tell all of my clients yes. Then, I would bite off more than I could chew, so to speak. This only caused more stress and more emotional damage. I’ve learned that it’s always about the integrity of the hair.
How have your clients benefited from hair extensions?
My clients have definitely benefited from extensions. They can add fullness, length, or even both! Talk about instant gratification!
How have hair extensions impacted your life?
Extensions have greatly impacted my business. My clients love them so much; they can’t seem to be without them. Anytime I’ve ever put one extension into my clients hair as a trial, they always come back and tell me they are ready for a full head of extensions. Like I said, it’s instant gratification and a client for life!
What is your favorite brand of hair extensions and why?
My favorite brand of hair extensions is Hot Heads. I feel like out of all the other brands, this is probably the least damaging and they’re VERY lightweight. The quality of the hair is great! They are attached to the hair with adhesive tape and they lay nicely on the head. NO bulk, beads, or glue!
