So the guy you’ve been crushing on has finally asked you out on a date. Millions of things start running through your head like what should I wear? Should I go for a natural look or channel my inner Kim Kardashian?
Speaking of Kim Kardashian, what if he figures out I am wearing hair extensions!?
Personal First-Date Disaster
Let me start with a personal story about my first experience dating with hair extensions to ease your mind. My long-time love interest had finally asked me out on a date to dinner. Since he wanted to go that night, I didn’t have much time to prepare. As I was showering and washing my hair, I discovered that a few of my micro-links were hanging by a thread, so to speak. I panicked and texted my stylist, and since it was so last minute, she couldn’t squeeze me in. There was no way I was going to cancel on my date because of my extensions, so I decided just to deal with it.
The beginning of the date was going well, and we were having a great conversation. That was until I ran my fingers through my hair, and one of my extensions decided to come with it. My extensions were in my hand in plain sight, and I was completely mortified. I just sat there frozen not knowing what to say.
I did the only thing I knew and laughed it off and told him I was wearing hair extensions. To my surprise, he didn’t care one bit! He said he thought most girls wore extensions and wasn’t surprised that I was too. I quickly threw my extensions in my clutch and the night went on.
Moral of the story? Be honest with your date, partner, whoever. Hair extensions have come a long way and, for the most part, are no longer burdened with negativity.
Tips & Tricks
If you are going on a first date and are reluctant to be “au naturel” right off the bat, here are some useful tricks to avoid any first-date blunders:
+ Bring a larger clutch or purse that will fit any panels or strands of hair that decide to become loose during your date.
+ Pull your hair back into a loose braid or bun if you are worried he may run his hands through your hair or even worse, tug at it.
+ Bring extra hair ties or bobby pins for emergency hair extension friendly hairstyles.
At some point, your significant other will either figure out your secret, or you will need to be honest. However, by then they will accept and love you for who you are, weave or no weave. If hair extensions make you feel confident and beautiful, then that’s all that matters!
