Summer isn’t over yet! Taking care of your hair extensions should be easy. Just like your skin, your hair needs a little extra protection and love during the hot dry summer months. Here are a few tips and tricks to keep your hair looking as hot as the temperatures rise.
1. Add Protection
Summertime often means water activities like trips to the beach, lake, or taking a dip in the pool. It’s always a good idea to protect your hair extensions prior to jumping in. Apply a leave-in conditioner from mid strand to ends to guard against sun, wind and water damage. In addition, to leave-in conditioner, gathering your hair in a low ponytail or braid is a great way to avoid excessive tangling and matting. After splashing around you should shampoo your hair, or rinse with fresh water to remove any dirt and debris or chemicals such as chlorine which can break down the extension bond and cause color fading.
The effects of the sun are powerful, and while many of us enjoy a nice summer glow, too much sun can be dangerous for your skin and for your hair. A wide-brimmed hat can protect more than the delicate skin on your face, it can protect your hair from sun damage as well. Just like your own natural hair, hair extensions can lighten or experience color fading when exposed to too much sun. Top off your look with a summer hat for a touch of elegance and for it’s protecting power!
2. Use Clarifying Shampoo
Hot days mean more sweat. Be sure you are using a clarifying shampoo at least once a week to remove any buildup of natural oils, dirt and styling residue.
3. Use a Thermal Protectant
A thermal protectant is important to use prior to styling your hair extensions, it’s especially useful during the summer months when the heat doesn’t come from just your styling tools but from the sun as well.
Taking a little extra care of your hair extensions during the summer months will keep your hair and your extensions healthy and happy for the seasons to come!
