Ever wonder why exactly you need to move up or replace your hair extensions every 6-8 weeks? Let’s take a look at what can happen when you don’t.
DISCOMFORT
As your hair grows, so do your extension attachments. When the attachments grow too far away from the scalp they are easier to snag and pull (which hurts!) when styling, brushing, or simply running your fingers through your hair.
DAMAGE
Overgrown hair extension attachments are easier to snag and pull which not only hurts, it can cause some real damage. When a fast-moving brush gets between a hair extension and the scalp there’s a possibility the extension can get ripped right out of your head, taking your hair with it. If you’re not fond of bald spots, keep on top of your regularly scheduled extension maintenance.
TANGLING/MATTING AT THE BASE
If you go longer than 8 weeks between extension maintenance you run the risk of developing tangling and matting above the extension attachment. Sometimes this tangling and matting can be brushed out during the removal process, sometimes it causes hair to break or tangles can become so severe they need to be cut out. (Tangling, dreading, and matting is most common in strand by strand application methods.)
NOT SO EASY REMOVAL
Most permanent extensions are designed to be easily and painlessly removed at the 6-8 week mark. This has less to do with the actual extension hair itself and more to do with the attachment method. Attachments can become gummy or sticky when worn too long because the natural oils in your hair plus your washing and styling routine slowly break down the adhesive properties. When worn past their removal date some extension attachments can become so broken down that getting the residue out of your natural hair can become a full-scale endeavor, and may end up costing you extra. You’re most likely to experience damage to your own hair when extensions are a. Applied incorrectly, b. Maintained incorrectly, c. Removed incorrectly, or d. Worn past 8 weeks.
Do yourself and your stylist a favor and keep up with the recommended removal and reapplication time frame, your hair health will thank you! Learn more about Hair Extension Methods.
